Hi Chris Martin, Security Strategist at Broadcom. As a cyber security professional, what would you say makes the IT industry exciting to be a part of right now?

High-profile events, such as the Crowdstrike incident, have shown that technology affects many parts of our daily lives, and that security is crucial for every system and critical infrastructure. In the past, when I spoke to people outside the IT industry they didn't ask many follow-up questions about my job, but that has changed now.

AI has also highlighted the relevance of the tech industry. Do you have any quick thoughts on that development?

Like many others, I'm a bit tired of everyone talking about their products having AI. But the truth is, this new technology is driving progress in many areas. Personally, I’m most excited about adaptive AI and biotech, which have the potential to find cures for diseases. But at the same time as there is a great potential to do good, the potential for AI to be harmful is just as great and may even threaten our geopolitical system.

Do you think AI will help us attract more people to our industry?

I think there’s a good chance it will, as AI is a high-profile technology that almost everyone will use and be interested in. Before if I met someone in a social setting, who works in a different industry, we never talked about technology. Today, we very well may because AI has created an overlap.

If you could travel back in time and bring your 15-year-old self to this time, what tech innovation would have amazed that young man?

Back in 1985, I would have been completely awestruck by the smartphone and the fact that it’s possible to communicate over the internet. When I was 18, I went to Germany as an exchange student. Back then, the only way to keep in touch with friends and family in Cincinnati, Ohio, was to write letters or make expensive landline calls. I can’t imagine how I would have reacted if someone had put a smartphone in my hand.

We are super excited to have you deliver your keynote “The SASE Awakening – Analyst Concept vs. Enterprise Reality” at Five Years Out. Can you give us a quick preview of what you will be talking about

I’ll be talking about the good intentions and unrealistic expectations of SASE and what the future holds. Many companies make decisions based on the conclusions of one analyst and make investment decisions based on this one framework, which can harm them in the future.
